Ep. 142. 2 Kings 13-15 | Some Kings
EPISODE 142
SOME KINGS: 2 KINGS 13-15
On days like today, when you are covering so many kings in just a few short chapters, and you find yourself wondering why you read these histories, I want to remind you that all of the books of Kings and Chronicles show us how rebellious the household of God behaved. They had rejected God as King and turned to their own kings. Then, they rejected God as God and turned to idols. These books of the Bible highlight the fruitless pursuit of earthly kings for us. No political system or ruler can bring about righteousness and peace for a people. Only God can do that. We look at these pages and recognize the futility of an earthly kingdom. Instead, we turn our longing toward a heavenly kingdom, our heavenly city whose builder and founder is God.
The people of the New Testament who endeavored to make Jesus king by force had missed the lesson. They were still looking for an earthly man to sit on an earthly throne and rule amidst the nations. They missed the lessons of the kings of Israel and Judah that no earthly king could accomplish what only God intended to do. It is why they could not fathom the heavenly kingdom that Jesus was bringing about, and in a jealous rage, they ultimately put him to death.
So we read these pages and are warned. We are reminded to put no hope in man but only in Jesus, our true and living King.
