Ep. 147. Joel | The Entire Thing
EPISODE 147
THE ENTIRE THING: JOEL 1-3
Joel is a straightforward read in terms of length. But don't let its quick nature lead you to overlook its treasures. Judgment is set for the rebellious people of God, but the prophet speaks the words of the Lord, "Return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your garments." There is still the chance that the people of God could find themselves receiving his blessings rather than a curse.
The end of chapter two gives us two beautiful texts mentioned in the New Testament. First, "I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see vision." This statement is fulfilled on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2. Peter tells us as much in his first address to the crowds. Second, we read, "It shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." Paul utilizes this text in Romans to remind the reader of the hope of salvation for all who believe. It is important to see how the New Testament writers use and quote the Old Testament. It gives us insight into how the people of the day understood the OT and frames for us how we should read these texts.
The third chapter of Joel is yet to be fulfilled but will be in the final days. In the final days, God will bring all the enemies of Israel together against them. At that time, God will make an end to all who set themselves up as enemies of God. You will absolutely want to read Zechariah chapter 14 to see this more clearly.
