Ep. 79. 1 Samuel 19-20 | David in Peril
EPISODE 79
DAVID IN PERIL: 1 SAMUEL 19-20
Saul, knowing that God was going to give the kingdom to David, sought to put David to death on several occasions. And Saul was not subtle about it. He just straight up chunked a spear at David, hoping to pin him to the wall.
Michal, David's wife, is a riddle. We know she loved David and even helped him escape from her father, but when her father questioned her, she lied and told Saul that David forced her to facilitate his escape. I also find it troublesome that there was an idol available in the house to hide under the covers.
I strongly encourage you to make a note in your Bible at the end of 1 Samuel 19 that directs you to Psalm 59. The heading of the 59th Psalm reads: "A prayer of David, written when Saul sent men to surround his house and murder him."
I do appreciate David's heart in the midst of what can only be described as extremely stressful circumstances. He writes, "My God in his steadfast love will meet me; God will let me look in triumph on my enemies." And again, "I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress."
It is clear that David has his confidence completely set on the trustworthiness of God. It serves as a good reminder for us to continue to rest in God even in the midst of dire circumstances.
Jonathan proves himself to be a good and faithful friend to David and will later offer David much-needed encouragement.
